This 1000 peso note from the Banco Cental De Bolivia shows the national heroine Juana Azurduy DePadilla in her military regalia. DePadilla is considered a hero of the Bolivian Republic, having fought against Spanish occupation in the early 19th century and establishing the boundaries of the first Bolivian state after the Spanish retreat in 1826. Perhaps due to her role in leading the Bolivian troops along with her husband, DePadilla is here shown as more characteristically male than female, the only feminine indicia being the long hair draped over the ear and tied behind her head.
